To my family, America is the land of opportunity and happiness. From the time when the plane landed on American soil, I knew that this was the place my life would completely change and I would have a new beginning. Everything in America seemed so strange to me; the streets, the people, and the language. I had a difficult time adapting to the American culture, especially the language. I did not know a single English word. In school, I would listen to teachers with confusion and there was no one around to ask for help. English was a very challenging language and I had a very difficult time learning it, however my hard work paid off.I was able to communicate with others within a year. After knowing how to speak English, my life became easier and I began to make more friends and become more confident in myself. It was different in America than in Ukraine. There was a variety of stores, places and buildings. My family wasn’t able to adjust very well. We didn’t know what stores to go to or even how the store worked. In Ukraine, we provided our own food from our locally grown gardens and farm animals. In order to survive, my parents toke on two jobs in America and were constantly away. My older sister was 15 years old at the time and was responsible for 8 other children.
